"Hi, I'm Carmen Lynne and welcome to Expert Village and we're talking today about Hypnotherapy. Two of my areas of special expertise that I like to help people with are chronic pain and addiction. That is overcoming both of those areas. On addiction, addiction can be to a substance such as alcohol or drugs, that could be recreational drugs or prescription drugs. Or it can be an addiction to a type of activity such as, of course, gambling or you can be addicted to eating, or the Internet, all sorts of different types of addictions. What are we looking at exactly here in terms of how hypnotherapy can help with addiction? Addiction is, basically, that you have developed a habit of behavior and what we need to do is to break that habit of behavior and also to form new associations. Because, what's happening in the addiction process is that your brain is forming certain associations, i.e. when I feel sad or upset, I have a drink. So that's the association that your forming. Or, when I feel sad or upset I eat several cookies, donuts. So that's the association that has been formed in your brain. So, what we're doing in hypnosis is we're enabling the brain to disassociate from that association, form a new and positive association. We will be doing that using things like guided imagery and desensitization and all of those things to help you to, really in a sense, break these old negative patterns and form new and more positive patterns for you."
