"In this clip we will talk about the immediate prior to surgery preparation and getting ready to perform the breast reduction. Before the surgery it's very important the patient has disclosed all of the medications, and especially herbal medications, which are not generally disclosed, because they are not prescriptions. However, there are herbal medications that can interfere with bleeding and surgery. An easy way to remember are the "three G's", which would be, Garlic, Ginseng and Gingo Biloba, all of which can in some way interfere with platelet function and cause bleeding at surgery. Therefore large doses should be discontinued one to two weeks prior to surgery. Other medications quite commonly are, aspirin, or any aspirin containing medication, or ibuprofen, or any ibuprofen containing medication, such as Advil, Naproxen, also which can interfere with platelet function and then there can be more bleeding at surgery. So it's very important that those medications be stopped or discontinued prior to the surgery. The patient will have had photographs, and a final discussion with the surgeon. And the surgeon will have given prescriptions for usually a pain medicine for a few days, an antibiotic for a few days, and final discussion regarding the details of the surgery."
