"Okay, now we're ready to cut the play. When I'm talking about cut the play, I don't mean take scissors to the actual play, I'm talking about the section or the portion of dialogue--words between the characters--that we're going to pull out to present. Now, I know it would be really nice if you could just take out scene five of Act one and do that for your presentation. But it doesn't necessarily work that way. A cutting has to make sense. Basically, it has to have a through line. We have to have a beginning, a middle, and an end. We're going to establish who these characters are, and we're going to follow them all the way through from the beginning of the relationships and what happens between them, to the middle, to the end. So that's going to be one of the most important parts of the cutting."
