"Okay, I'll say the word standard American, followed by the way it'll sound New York dialect. Repeat after me. Letter, "lettah". Sweater, "sweatah". Now, those two words the "R" sound was at the end. Sometimes, like in the word "cheerful", the "R" sound is in the middle and we still drop it. Cheerful, "cheeahful". Rarely, "raeuhly". Paired, "paeuhed". Gear, "geah". Now let's try some sentences. "Gat the sweatah from the cheeahful runnah." "Gat the sweatah from the cheeahful runnah." "The weiad deah appeahed cheeahful." "The weiad deah appeahed cheeahful." Drop those Rs after the vowel sounds."
