"Okay, you've learned the vowels. Now we're ready to move on. And the first thing we're going to talk about is simple "R" drops. And in many words New Yorker's tend to, they don't always do it; well they always do it, but they tend to do it after a vowel sound sometimes, and that is drop the "R" sound. So in a word like "mother", you and I would say "mother", they would say "motha", the "R" just disappears. We would say "cheerful", they would say "cheeful". So the "R" just doesn't exist anymore, and it primarily follows a vowel. In the word "cheerful" you've got a vowel, so it becomes "cheeful". "Mother", you've got an "er", so it becomes "motha". And I'm going to give you a drill in just a minute on a lot of words where you've got a vowel and then you drop that "R". And this is going to sound real familiar to you, this is what's going to start making this sound like a New York dialect."
