on 8/2/2008 This was a great help to me in tuning my flute. I recently learned how to make river cane flutes and was having difficulty getting the right notes from each hole. I was able to complete a practice flute and tune the notes how I wanted them. Thanks for the info.

"This flute is a little bit lower in F-sharp and it has six holes as you can see and the scale is just the same. So even though there's a sixth hole there I left it closed the whole time that I played the scale and I just lifted all the other fingers in secession as I did with the five hole flute. So you may ask why is there a sixth hole if you're not playing the scale with that hole? The answer is that there's an in between note, a chromatic note that you can get easier with a hole there. So that if you want more flexibility in the scale, that sixth hole is nice. It's not even so necessary because you can get the same note depending on your particular flute you can get the same note in other ways too. So with this five hole flute I just cover these holes and sometimes it's these two, sometimes it's these two, it depends. You can get all of the notes the same way it's just easier with the sixth hole flute."
