"Now, what you're going to be aiming for after you learn the basic notes of the flute is expression. Expression involves differences between different ways of playing things. So one of the main ways you can get some expression in your music is to start the notes in different ways. Now so far we were just blowing into the flute and moving your fingers and that's really called legato or a very smooth playing. You can also use your tongue to stop the notes and start them. So for example if you whisper do or to into the flute you'll get a very different kind of an attack. You can actually mix and match between these different styles. You can play with that, just practice a little bit, you can make the tonguing very short, short and sharp. Or somewhere in between."
