Bass Fiddle Fret Tips

"On behalf of Expert Village, I'm Steve Anthony here in New York City, today we're going to talk a little bit about Country Bass Fiddle techniques for beginners. One of the trickiest things about starting out with the Up-right Bass is the fact that, as we mentioned before, there are no frets to find your way around the finger board. To beginners, the easiest way to remedy that, as you can see what I've done here, I've place finger position markers on the side of the neck. Purists will say that that's a cheat, don't do that. But I say, "Whatever makes it easier to get you going, there's nothing wrong with that." Now, these markers happen to correspond to the dots on the side of a guitar neck. This would be the third fret, fifth fret, seventh fret, ninth fret. Now, also what it has on a guitar neck you'll notice the double dot marker that I've placed on here to indicate the octave position. So, if I play for example, the E string open and then on the 12 marker, it's an octave. Same with the A, D, and G. And that's a good way to give yourself a little visual reference and don't let anybody tell you it's a cheat. It just helps you get done what you need to get done."
