Importance of Twists in Plays

"STEVE CAVERNO: Hi, I'm Steve Caverno on behalf of Expert Village. And today, I'll be talking to you about developing your plot. Now, we'll talk about foreshadowing. What is foreshadowing and how does it play into the plot of the play? Foreshadowing is bringing something up and then later, using it. So, in Romeo and Juliet, foreshadowing could be when Romeo first goes to Friar Lawrence. Friar Lawrence is tending to his plants. He has a love of horticulture. And then, later in the play, Juliet goes to Friar Lawrence to acquire the potion which simulates her death. So, first off, we just randomly learned that Friar Lawrence deals with potions and with plants and then, it pays off when Juliet comes to him. Similarly to what Chekhov was noted the same that if you introduce a gun in act one, it should fire in act two. You introduce things and they seem kind of random and then, they're used."
