"STEVE CAVERNO: Hi, I'm Steve Caverno on behalf of Expert Village. And today, I'll be talking to you about developing your plot. For this series on plot, we'll be using one of Shakespeare's greatest plays to kinda guide us through the different elements of plot. We'll be using Romeo and Juliet, the classic love story of two ill fated lovers. And we'll talk, in this section, about goals and obstacles. First off, you want your characters to have a strong goal, a goal that they were willing to die for, the highest stake she can possibly have. In Romeo and Juliet, these two lovers meet and they resolve that they will continue their love through death if they have to and they conquer all kinds of obstacles. Juliet's parents have Paris planned out for her future husband. Romeo gets banished from Verona and he can't come back to see his one true love. And they attack all different kinds of obstacles, they try different tactics. Romeo tries to get back to Juliet. They tried to fake their own death. All these things happen and is, then, encountering obstacles to their goal and finding different ways to work around those obstacles. That's what makes it so compelling. That is what makes compelling drama. And later, we'll look into some of the ways in which their goals and obstacles create the plot of the play."
