I'm Teddy Kern at Dance Manhattan in New York City and this is Heather Gehring and Lou Brock and we've been teaching Foxtrot. I want to describe ballroom dance position to you because it's a very important part of being a good partner, both leader and follower. It's called a frame. Imagine an armature around a sculpture made of wire and people decorate it. This is the frame of ballroom dancing, it's very important because it allows Heather to sense what Lou wants her to do. It allows Lou to indicate with her, without speaking to her, what he wants her to follow. Heather is standing again, slightly to Lou's right, so she's slightly offset and his hand is just underneath her shoulder blade. And notice how smoothly his hand is across her back, his fingertips just barely reaching her spine. Her left arm follows his right arm across her shoulder and she reaches up where it is comfortable for her, as far as it is comfortable and attaches herself to his arm in a very loose, graceful manner. And the other part of their hands are approximately shoulder height and this creates a frame. It's very important to stand up straight ladies, very important gentlemen as well to create a beautiful frame for ballroom dancing.
