The drum is the one of the oldest known musical instruments in the history of mankind—and its fundamental design has not changed for eons. Far from today’s uses as a percussive foundation for rock music, drumming has a more profound legacy. Drums have often been used as a method of communication over long distances, and the drum has figures largely in some religious ceremonies. The first drum was invented, perhaps, with the idea of mimicking the human heartbeat, yet today its music has developed into a technical, complex arrangement of beats and rhythms. A varied arrangement of small, medium and large drums and cymbals are arranged into kits, where a drummer can choose from a palette of sounds to lead or accompany any given song. These days, kit sizes vary from the simple to the outrageous, and styles run the gamut—but the drum is still very much the heartbeat of the music.

"Hi, I'm Shaun Schaefer on behalf of Expert Village today we are going to learn the basics in rock drumming. I like to call it rock drumming 101, the basics. Hi, I'm Shaun Schaefer and I'm a drummer. I've been playing the drums for about 15-16 years right now I'm a drummer in a rock band international known rock band Blessed Union of Souls. I've played all over the world, I've played in front of hundreds of thousands of people and played thousands of shows. One thing remains the same you got to play good. How you do that is knowing your craft, knowing your art, mine is the drums. So what we are going to do is we are going to teach you the very basics in rock drumming. This is where every drummer starts right at the beginning. So before we get started; we are going to identify what we used drums and cymbal wise to play the most basic rock beat and that is what is going to get you started on your road to success. "
