"In this next segment we are going to discuss the guitar neck, and also the fret board. The neck is of course this outer extension that enables you to use your fingering hand to play the guitar. The fret board, this example is a maple fret board. They also come in rosewood, also in ebony and other darker woods, which gives it a different feeling and kind of different playability and tone. In this case, the maple fret board, has in this case twenty-one frets. Many fret boards, the average is twenty-two. They also go to twenty-four and actually higher in more uncommon examples. But, the fret is basically the metal piece here, not the wood in between the frets, but simply the metal part. And what that does, it simply gives you different notes. So you can start from low open, and start on the first fret and move up and essentially you get your different notes. Plus the backs of them, in this example this one has a like a little stripe on it. Some of them are unfinished, you can get like a more natural look to it. That also sometimes help the smoothness when you manipulating your hand up and down the fret board while you are playing. Also these little dots here are what we call fret markers, and pretty much just represent third fret, fifth, seventh, ninth, twelfth, fifteenth. It is kind of like a reference point to where you are playing at without having to guess."
