"RYAN LARSON: So, we want to really prove to you that we're just really playing a pattern right now. So the best way to do this is to take this exact same thing we just read and put it under another scale. So if we look at--let's do C major. C major is a really easy one. We start on C and we number up 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 to C again, and that's our C major scale. So, now we can play this passage, right? 1, 5, 6, 5, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 3, 4, 3, 3, 1, 1, 2, 1, 3, 5, 4, 6, 3, 5, 7, 2, 5, 1. Or we could do it on any key, B major. B, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. So we got 1, 5, 6, 5, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 3, 4, 3, 3, 1, 1, 2, 1, 3, 5, 4, 6, 3, 5, 7, 2, 1, 5, 1. So you can hear how similar it is and it sounds almost exactly the same except that it's in a different key and really, unless you have perfect pitch, you're not really even going to notice, so the better you get at reading patterns, the easier sight reading through tunes will be., and if you'd take this simple idea and just start reading through a couple of real book tunes to see how easy it is to figure out these notes and get on to new things."
