Now we're going to go through and play the tune and I'm going to improvise using an E flat pentatonic scale. Again, if you want to look up more information on the pentatonic scale, you can research "E flat pentatonic" and I've done all the different scales you can do for E flat major and it will come up, but for right now, I'll show you it real quick and we're just going to do some nice melodic ideas so you can work on your improv at home. So if you look at the key board, we have E flat major and pentatonic means "5 note scale". So I use 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6, so I just limit myself to those 5 notes. So I'm going to play through this whole tune and improvise using that 5 note scale. A great way to get your melody sounding great is just keep short, simple ideas and keep going back to it....like I'll just keep going back to that. So we get all these different sounds and color tones by changing the chords underneath the melody. And you can use the same, simple scale and get all these different, nice, lush sounds out of the piano using some nice, simple, easy-to-get ideas and putting them under our fingers.
