How to Read Guitar Tabs for the Bass in E

"RYAN LARSON: Now we're going to show you how the E major scale will visually looks on the guitar using tab. So if you look at this piece of paper here we have four lines going across each one represents a bass string from the top string to the low string. And then these numbers here are the frets so 7th fret, 9th freth, 11th remember that same pattern 7-9-11-7-9-11. See it's skips a fret each time right? It skipped on the 8th and 10th fret on each one. And then you have 8-9-11 on the top where you got that little crunch there 8 to 9. So you start right here on the 3rd string and I put a square around that note so you know. And this is something you should write down at home you can find this scale on the internet as well if you search for tab E major, major scale. But you want to write this down 7-9-11-7-9-11-8-9-11 and put a square around the 7 here and the 9 up here 'cause that's the root, those are your Es. So you got 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-1 right there are 7 notes in the major scale and you're going from E to E. So E, F sharp, G sharp, A, B, C sharp, D sharp, E. And we'll go over that in the next segment but right now you want to make sure you really have these under your fingers so you want to write it down and then just go through and practice it starting right here 7th fret right there dot. Right 7-9-11-7-9-11-8-9-11 and we keep going down to the bottom shrink too 11-9-7. So you got 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-1 so there is your root. And that's your E major scale written out in tab."
