Series Summary

Have you ever been sippin’ on some syrup in your Caddy, lettin’ your chains hang low, makin’ your way to the club to get your swerve on? You step inside and all around you bodies are bouncin’ to the rhythm of the beat. The bass bumps inside your head as the MC raps tight to the turns in the music, his voice a colorful collection of meaningful lyrics and smooth sounds. Your head starts that almost imperceptible bob to the infectious groove that hangs on each beat, each snare, each syllable. Pretty soon, the scene has absorbed you and you become a part of the atmosphere of the party, your body obeying the law of hip hop.

Now that you know the power of the music, in this free video series, learn how to create your own hip hop beats on a Korg Triton keyboard. Our synth expert, Ryan Larson, will explain the basic sequencing process step by step, including how to use samples, setup and create loops, choose and add effects to tracks, record instruments like a thumping bass drum, crisp hi hat cymbals, tight snare hits, and other percussion, add bass lines, keyboard melodies and horns, how to mix tracks, and even how to play the sequencer for a live performance.

Video Transcript

"So, today we are going over how to make hip hop beats on "Korg Triton", and they will sound a little bit like this one. If you want you can skip back to the last track, and you will hear the actual beat we make today. We have not made it yet so, I am just giving you another beat, as an example. We are going to go through and show you how to go in and manually punch in different bass and drums. We will show you how to "loop it", we will show you how to go in and add effects. We will show you how to copy measures; we will give you a run through of just the overall process it takes to make a hip hop sequence beat. Then when we are done with all that, we will show you how to play with it live and you can go through, I will give you some references to go through and look up some "jazz piano" voicing?s, I also do "jazz piano". You can add some of that stuff in there as well and practice your own techniques as we go through and we look at these different hip hop styles. Now, you can hear that I have a lot of different effects on here, going in the background, but it has the same overlying bass loop and drum loop. I will show you how to add all these things and how to loop everything and how to make longer loops in this quick sixteen minute segment."
