Series Summary

The instrumental and vocal style of music commonly known as 'the blues' is actually derived from a repetitive 12 bar pattern and the blue notes. It was born in the slave camps of the United States in the form of hymnals, gospel tunes and spirituals, and evolved into a highly influential genre that has inspired everything from jazz to rock 'n roll to hip hop. Blues guitar is one of the purest forms of the genre, since slaves were typically allowed to have guitars or homemade banjos. The beginnings of blues music are steeped in tradition and at their purest when combined with stringed instruments.

"We are going to start our adventures in the key of F for our F blues and we are going to start of by doing our F seven chord. Blue is comprised with all F seven chords, so if we start right here in F we have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. That is your F seven chord (playing) so get that patter from under your head and we're going to number it one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. When I say when we go to our four chord, we are going to go to to B flat right, one, two, three, four and our five chord is a C. So all these chords come at F, so one chord, four chord, five chord, makes sense, right? Then we have our F blues scale which actually looks like this. (playing) So you got F A flat, B flat B and C, then you have E flat on the top. (playing piano) Now I'm going to take that blue scale and play it with my right hand, then play this nice I'm going to go one, three, five, one, four, six, with my left hand. It's really all the rhythm you put into it that give it that umpth. (playing piano) You can just sit for hours doing this just soloing with your right hand and really get that rhythm in you, and that's our first chord of blues in F."
