"Hello my name is Russell Squires and I’m here today on behalf of ExpertVillage.com. I’m going to be talking to you about the proper position and holding of the cello. To begin with, you’re going to want to extend your end pin until the bottom peg on the right side reaches the top of your ear. This will leave all parts of the cello right in your grasp. Next you’re going to want to take both knees and grasp the body of the cello, so that you leave your hands free to do much smoother and versatile, free movements. Next our thumb, the first position for our thumb goes, is exactly two inches below the peg box, from here we begin all of our scales and work our way up the finger board. And last of all, we have our posture, our posture should be straight, preferably on a flat hard chair. This will keep your back from hurting and leave your arms free to move about. This is how we hold a cello. "
