"On behalf of Expert Village, my name is Rodney Lopez and I'm Amelia Maldonado. We're here at Dance Manhattan Studios here in New York City, and we're teaching you bachata. The standard way to start a bachata dance after you're in closed position, generally, the traditional way is to start going sideways. I recommend sort of a sideways beginning. At any point when you feel comfortable, feel free to change direction with your partner and go forward and back. Once again, we'll start with a sideways basic. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Now move on forward, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Then with a little squeeze on her back, she knows that I want to change direction and go back to a sideways basic. 5, 6, 7, 8. If you're counting the music, you're going to hear when those 8s are coming. It'll be much easier for you to transition from one to the other. "
