"The next type of amplifier I'm going to discuss is a solid state amplifier. We just looked at a tube amplifier where the electricity went through the tubes. These are all circuitry, there's no tubes in either of these two amps. They're not always small like these are but what makes a solid state amplifier more practical is it's a lot lighter because tubes are very heavy and they're also a lot less expensive, tubes are expensive and circuit boards are not so expensive. So you'll see that these two amps which are pretty much practice amps, very low wattage, would be very practical for a solid state type because you don't want to spend three or four hundred dollars on an amp that you might only be using in your bedroom or your dorm room, you'd need something more substantial like one of those tube amps we looked at if you were playing a live show. That's not to say that larger amps can't be used on live performance, larger solid state amps, plenty of them are solid state amps but again it gets down to tone, how natural you want the tone and the quality of it if you want a warm sound or if you want a very brash sound."
