" Hi! For expertvillage.com this is Mitch Kaplan and welcome again. In this clip we will be talking about tuning. Now to tune, the reason why we tune the instrument, the clarinet, is so that we are all in the same sound, making the same sound as in orchestra or a band. And we want to make it enjoyable for the listener, that is always a good thing. Now you could either be sharp or you could be flat. If you are sharp, you would pull out, you would pull your mouthpiece out, or you could push it in, and that is how you adjust. And when you are pushing the mouthpiece you would become flat or you can adjust it you know, so pulling it out it is sharp, pushing it in is flat, making it flatter rather. The barrel is an important factor in tuning, some people buy separate barrels, and they try to extend the barrel or make it a shorter barrel, and this again also adjusts the sound to the clarinet. You can use a piano to tune to, or some people use an tuner, an electronic device that actually that makes the sound of A4 40… and that is in the decibels that is basically it. "

on 8/2/2008 It is obvious that Mr. Kaplan is not a clarinet player. No student should watch this video to learn how to play the clarinet. The mouthpiece should never be pulled or pushed to adjust tuning on the clarinet. A gap between the mouthpiece and the barrel will cause squeaks. Tuning for an open G can be accomplished by pulling at the barrel if you are sharp, or pushing in at the barrel if you are flat. Mr. Kaplan is sorely mistaken by saying that you will become flat by pushing in.
Please...students do not watch this video for advice!!!!
