"NEIL HUBBARD: A lot of people these days shop online and it's easy to go on to a website like eBay and see practice chanters for sale. Avoid buying the $20 one from Pakistan. They don't scale accurately and they're made out of wood that is probably not going to last as long as this one which is made out of a high impact plastic called Polypenco or Delrin. You could probably drive a truck over this and not break it. It'll last forever. The reeds are also made out of plastic these days. And so when or if you order a chanter try and find a reputable bagpipe supply store like the Tartan Thistle or the Bagpipe Shop. Ask them for a roll of hemp which is this yellow waxed string that is used to wrap the joints, a good reed and probably a full length chanter with recessed countersunk holes. It makes the transition from this chanter to the pipe chanter easier."
