"NEIL HUBBARD: Now, we're going to talk about the parts of the bagpipe and showed them to you. So as the name suggests a bagpipe consists of a bag and pipes. This is just simply a cover and underneath is a bag made out of, in this case, cow skin. The pipes themselves are always made out of African Blackwood which is a very heavy, dense, thick wood that has a perfect resonant quality for the bagpipe. These particular pipes are ornamented with engraved sterling silver parts and ivory. Ivory is no longer legal in the United States so these pipes were made before 1972. Chanters can either be made out of Polypenco which is this and also out of African Blackwood. The wood has sort of a more mellow tone, this is the chanter that I use when I play with my pipe band, and the tubes are all connected to the bag through these connections here."
