"PAT LOUIS: On behalf Expert Village, I'm Pat Louis in Miami, Florida. And today, I'm going to show you some basic drum rhythms. And then we talked about a waltz before which of course is one of the great ballads, you know a 3/4 type of thing. What we didn't talk about though, we should touch on is the jazz waltz. The jazz waltz is actually a 3/4 also but it's done in a string style. For instance, if you took the center section of "Delilah", it would be "My, my, my Delilah. My, my, my Delilah". Now, we--the snare drum is actually more open. So it doesn't have to be at the beat of two and four or two and three, it can actually be one beat and it can also be a couple of extra fill type things going on there, but the idea that a jazz waltz is basically a 3/4 just a little bit faster. Bass drum can be that of one-and, two-and, one-and, one-and, one-and, none-and. So there's a lot more freedom in the jazz waltz and if you have some guys you can really cook--it's a lot fun."
