Video Transcript

" Hey! I am Mark Black and welcome to expertvillage.com. We are going to be talking about vocal performance. The third thing I want to talk about there is breath support and that means supporting from the diaphragm. I want you to make this sound, I am going to go like “tssst.” I am saying the t-s-t sound and I want you to hold that really long and push, so I am going to go “tsssssst.” Do it with me again, take a big breath and push as long as you can, here we go, “tssssst.” Now my face might have gotten red, but that is what somebody is talking about when they just say support from the diaphragm. When they say sing louder, push to the end, that is what they are talking about. We felt that right in there. And that is not natural. The only time that you do that is when you are blowing out a birthday day cake or making the sound “tssst.” And again back to the habit thing, you never in life support from the diaphragm, you don’t say to kids, “kids I want you to come in here” and “son I want you to come in and help me,” and you not supporting from the diaphragm, but when you sing that is what you are supposed to do. So what I want you to imagine when you are singing notes, first I want you… anytime you have a question, am I supporting from the diaphragm, make that sound or imagine you are blowing out a birthday cake, pushing all the air out from the diaphragm, this thing is better though because it gives some resistance like your vocal chords do."
