"Today we are talking about intro to piano and I would like to introduce to you the concept of tempo. Tempo is a difficult thing a lot of times for people to grasp. It's the measure of beats or time between the notes and how fast they are played. And I have this here, this nifty little invention that has helped people for a long time now to help keep a more constant tempo or beat in their playing and allows you to measure the time that you're going to use to play the notes on the page. And I will attempt now to show you how this works. Well with this particular device, this is called a metronome, and this one here is a little different because this is a windup one. You can get these at any music store. They also have digital ones now which will click or beep at you. This one here is nice because it doesn't require a battery and all you do to get it going is you wind it up a little bit here on the side. This one is already wound and it's usually in a case connected like this. You pull it out and then you just allow it to swing freely. And now we've created the tempo by which to practice, which we can use."
