"Now, as we start looking at the music, we want to discuss now the different types of notes that are positioned here on the page. As we look at it, you see these notes here, we'll take these as an example, these notes here are quarter notes. And the way that I recognize them as being quarter notes are that they are filled in circles with a stem coming out of it. The stem could be up or down and, in this case, they are down. But, if you notice, that the circle is actually filled in and that tells me that it's a quarter note. Okay? Now, if we look over here in the next part, we have here in this next bar, these are bars, these lines that go between here, these are telling me that this is the next bar. And here, we have a whole note. And I know it's a whole note because it is a not filled in circle without a stem. There is no line coming out of it, there's no stem, and that tells me that that is a whole note. Okay? Now, if we want to start looking at what these are and their values, a quarter note will get one count. So, each one of these notes receives one count or one beat per note and whole notes receive four counts or four beats per note."
