Hi everybody, Kevin Smith back, TubaLove, doing a typical practice session. In this part of the session involves something called modes, m o d e. I like working on them because they're just they sound somewhat different than our regular scales in Western music. Before our system of Western music as we know it now came along in the Sixteenth century, modes were the way that music was notated period. As far as we know at least in written form, modes originated in ancient Greece. And they were just writing them for four stringed sort of small like guitar instrument that was called the lyre, l y r e. So there were just four notes there, and then they developed. But unlike, unlike our contemporary Western music which may change keys within a song. Modes tended to be just that one mode for the entire song. Next, next outline session I'm going to play the actual modes, but to let you know now what we know as modes as we sort of developed them have different names. Starting there Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and the Locrian mode. And they're still used today some. Certain sacred music uses them. Certain types of folk music use them. You find them sometime in jazz. One of my favorite rock players, Marc Bolan, with a band called T-Rex. He writes in modes a lot. So that's my explanation of modes.
