on 10/8/2008 Thanks Ken this is just what I needed.I am a 49 year old just learning to play the drums.I get what you are saying and can't wait to practice up.I still have a little trouble getting my R hand to do one thing my L hand another and then my foot another.I can do two of those pretty easy but that third one messes with me a bit.

" Hi! My name is Ken Marcou and I’m going to be showing you a little bit about how to change your standard rock beats in 4/4 time and making them sound a little bit different giving them some more inflection for instance giving them some jazz, some jazz tones. I’m going to be playing a 4/4 beat on the ride cymbal with a kick and snare drum, kick drum on 1 and 3, snare drum on 2 and 4 but I’m going to be changing up a little bit I’m going to be improvising and this is something you just need to get the feel for but here’s an example of one improvisation of a standard 4/4 beat, I’ll start off playing the beat and then I’ll branch off and change as I go…now there were times where my snare drum did not end on beat 1 or 3 or beat 2 or 4 it was hitting on up beats and everywhere in between but you have a starting point and you improvise off of that point and it’s just a feel thing, you need to practice it, start with your standard 4/4 beat where you’re playing beat 1 and 3 on the kick drum, beat 2 and 4 on the snare drum and change it up from there, do what feels good, do what’s fine."
