Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Settle can be taught with your dog on a leash and collar. When your dog gets excited take the leash and step on it. This works best if your dog's head is a little lower than his shoulders.

  2. Step 2

As you keep your foot on the leash give your dog the command "settle" and keep repeating it until your dog goes into the down position.

  3. Step 3

Once your dog is in the down position tell your dog "good settle." If your dog does not attempt to get up, take your foot off the leash.

  4. Step 4

If you cannot physically hold your dog down with your foot, you may need to set up a back tie and use that. A back tie is an eye hook screwed into the wall with a leash attached to it. Now when your dog is excited your dog can be attached to the leash on the back tie.
