Step 1
Puppy biting is a natural, normal behavior. Puppies play bite and do it with each other. Most puppies will bite when they get excited and want to play. I have told dog owners for years that "the only good dog is a tired dog." When your puppy starts to bite, talk him for a walk, play fetch, go swimming. Mental exercise is also good such as obedience and tricks.

Step 2
When your puppy starts play biting you can redirect the behavior by playing tug games or fetch. Your puppy has a physical and psychological need to chew and bite. Providing some outlets for your dog will go a long way in helping with the biting.

Step 3
Keeping a leash on your dog when you are in the house can help with biting. I show puppy owners how they can use the leash to control the biting. When your puppy starts to bite, take the leash and secure it to something sturdy or step on it. Now you can withdraw your hands and attention until your puppy calms. Once your puppy calms down and is not trying to bite, you can give your puppy her freedom back.

Step 4
Bite inhibition is when you verbally let your puppy know that she has bitten you and it hurts. When you are playing with your puppy and your pup bites verbally, say "OUCH" and quickly pull your hands away. When you do this you have to be a little dramatic and you have to loudly say "OUCH." If you don't say it loud enough it will have little effect on your pup.
