A great way to track your progress is to make sure you're getting your target heart rate and getting the cardiovascular benefits of exercise. We take our ten second pulses, so you're going to hold two index and your middle fingers on your carotid artery. Good, find your pulse, and then we're going to do a ten second count, so find a clock or watch, take for 10 seconds and just count from zero how many beats you get in this 10 seconds. Here we go. After your done counting for the 10 seconds you want to have your heart rate between 21 and 28 beats during that 10 second period. On the higher end it means you were really working hard and you got you know, your heart rate up to a good level. If you're exceeding 28 and especially if you're exceeding 30 that's a signal to let you know that you possibly worked yourself too hard and you want to be careful because we want to work in that target heart range where we're still being healthy and not overdoing it, we don't want to under do it either. We want to make sure we're challenging our bodies and really getting a workout. So, if you're under 21, you might need to step it up a level the next time you work out. Another great thing is to take the count 3 minutes later again and see how much it has dropped, so if you were at 25 beats per 10 seconds and then 3 minutes later, do another test and you're at 16 or 15, that's a really great drop rate. The further you are from the heart rate that you were means the faster your heart restores to its normal levels. Which signifies that you're in great shape, so go ahead and use those tools to help you track your progress and make sure you're getting the workout you're intending to get.
