The Merengue originated in the Dominican Republic in the second half of the 18th century. It is a lively happy dance with joyful music. The beat is a four count and steps are slow as the body is kept very upright and in a regal position. The turns are slow and side steps are kept to four beats typically. The main position is closed and partners hold each other close. Typically the dancers never let go of one another's hands and can do double-handed turns and what are called “pretzels.”
In this free video series you will learn the basic tips and steps for the Merengue including more advanced moves like pretzels and double-handed turns. Not only does it explain the man's footwork but it also walks through the correct steps for the woman as well. Just to show you how it all comes together, there is also a full demonstration of everything shown in the series when the techniques are combined.
