Series Summary

Hip hop dancing covers a large range of styles and specific moves and techniques, but the cornerstone of the style is undoubtedly break dancing. Over time, that so-called old school way of dancing and participating in hip hop culture has evolved into many different off-shoots. Funk dancing, popping and locking, jigging, freaking, krump, and hyphy are examples of types of hip hop dance, and each style contains certain moves that distinguish it from other forms. Throughout the world, there are competitions and there is no doubt as to the influence hip hop and that style of dancing have had on the cultures it touches. Here in the United States, many people opt to take hip hop dancing lessons, and although some critics believe that teaching orchestrated steps in that fashion is adverse to the true roots of the culture and the history of the dance, many people enjoy taking the lessons and learning how to break with the best of them. Video Transcript

"Hi I'm Bulletyme, dance choreographer here in L.A., here on behalf of Expert Village. I've been choreographing and studying dance for about eight years. I did most of my training in New York City and have recently relocated to California to pursue a career in choreography. I've trained under Nathan Trice of Alvin Ailey and Complexions and under Cecilia Marta who?s currently choreographing the Cirque tour. Brian Green who?s choreographed for Mya, Rhapsody James who?s choreographed for Beyonce. So I come from a very educated background as far as movement goes and presented my own work here in L.A. at the Key Club in the Carnival Choreographers Ball as well as the Carnival Choreographers Ball in New York, something like that and I'm just, yeah, taking steps to make dreams come true here. In the next few clips I'm going to be teaching you how to do basic waves. Some will get advanced, a little more advanced than the others but what waves are they're another illusion like isolations, they're just another illusion in hip-hop dance that make you look like you're pretty much under water or in water. You'll be learning how to wave from your fingertips all the way down through your shoulders, all the way down to the next fingertip and through your body and so on and so forth. So stay tuned."
