Series Summary

Recurring evidence suggests that many more people claim to be color blind than actually suffer from this disorder. In most cases, these pretenders are not seeking medical treatment or insurance benefits, they are simply attempting to excuse an appalling lack of taste. For the purpose of stereotyping such unfortunates, their affliction shall henceforth be known as color ignorance. This torment first manifests itself to the rest of the world when kids decide they want to pick out their own clothes. At this point, they may already be at a critical juncture in their development. If left unchecked, this problem could come back to haunt the parents in the form of a purple and green guest room once these wayward deficients become homeowners. Here at Expert Village we advise that you catch your kids early on and give them an understanding that will benefit them later in life, especially if they choose careers as designers or decorators. Or even if they are simply picking out an outfit or painting their house.

In this free series of art instruction videos, our long-time art teacher gives you an overview of basic color theory using the color wheel and several simple but effective demonstrations. Your children learn which colors work well together and which color combinations to avoid. She also shows you how to make your own color wheel and reinforces effective color usage with various works of art. As an added bonus, our expert includes fun projects where your kids can watch their new knowledge in action!

on 9/7/2008 We found this very helpful, and informative. I used this with my 5th Grader, who know about primary and secondary colors, but still found the experiments fun, and the drawings fun to do. We will be using this video series as a supplement to our Art Basics for Children. Thanks so much for making your knowledge and expertise available to us. D, Cobb

Video Transcript

"Hi, I'm Tracy Cheney and I've been an art teacher for over 20 years. And I'm going to do some art lessons for Expert Village and these are things you can do at home with your kids, or the kids can do right along with me. You can do it with your scout troop or anybody that wants to learn about color theory. We're going to take some time to learn how to mix colors and how colors work together and see that this is knowledge that everybody needs, whether you're an artist, of course we all need that, but if you're a fashion designer, if you design fabrics, you want to design cars, you are an interior decorator, all of this is basic knowledge that everybody has about color."
