Hi. I'm Michael Seto. In this clip we're going to talk about using reflectors for basic jewelry photography. What is a reflector? A reflector is anything that is going to bounce light back at your subject or part of your subject. When you're lighting a piece of jewelry, sometimes it's very important to get very even lighting or a certain type of lighting that you have in mind to highlight certain pieces of the jewelry. In order to do that, in addition to just your basic lights, you're going to want to pick up a bunch of reflectors, some very basic stuff. This is, for example, a gold reflector. It's just a piece of construction paper that you can get at any art store that's gold on one side, white on the other. Gold reflects good when you're working with a gold piece of jewelry because a reflective piece of gold jewelry is going to reflect back what it sees. If you use white, it'll tend to look a little duller, if you use gold, you'll get a real deep gold metal on there so that's what the gold reflector's for. Silver, similarly, it can often be used with platinum or white gold jewelry to give that a good reflection. Using white on that helps to even it out and dull it just a bit. Then finally, you've got this black on one side, white on the other piece of paper that can be used to reflect light on one side, or begin to take it away a little bit on the other side.
