Series Summary

Mosaics have been used since ancient times to decorate the interior walls, floors and ceilings of structures, from dwellings to sacred temples. Mosaic art is comprised of tiny pieces of glass, stone or other materials arranged into a decorative pattern or design to create a picture or simply as a decorative surface. Some of the most impressive mosaics can be found in the ancient structures of the Roman & Byzantine Empires, as well as modern subway stations and parks.

In this series of free arts & crafts videos you’ll learn how to create beautiful glass mosaic art. Expert artist Kathleen Dalrymple shows you the artistic process in easy to follow, step-by-step instructions. She’ll show you all the tools, supplies and materials you’ll need to get started, how to methodically break glass into pieces you can use, and how to arrange the glass into patterns and designs that match your inspiration and imagination. Once you’ve got the basics down, you’ll want to develop a unique artistic style.

Video Transcript

"Hello, today with Expert Village we're going to be viewing Kathleen as she demonstrates some of her glass on glass mosaic art work. She is going to be going through some of the process. The first thing you're going to need is an outline. This could be your own original art work or it could be one you take from another source. This is going to be placed firmly on the glass and centered correctly and this glass will be the final frame. Through the years she has experimented with all all sorts of media but became interested in mosaics seven years ago. The glass is scored with a pistol grip glass cutter and broken with breaking pliers. These items are all traditional stained glass tools. You can purchase them at any place you'd purchase stained glass tools. "
