"JOEL SIEGEL: All right. So, like I was saying, you have that kind of interaction between the kick and the high hat where you have the "e" and the "a'. Whenever those are happening, it's going to be between the eighth notes, okay? So, what's happening specifically on this two--or on this one beat, really is just beat one with that anticipation from four, from the bar before. So, a-one-and-a. Here's just a kick; two, three, four. Three, four. Okay? So, here's what it sounds like with the high hat. I'll do four-and, one-and, okay? Two, three. Sorry, I messed up. One, two, three. Okay? So, you can see that some of the kick is lining up with the high hat and some of it is going in between. So, the first beat, the "a" of 4 is between the eighth notes. The next beat, the downbeat of one is with that high hat eighth note, okay? So, one-and, two-and, three-and, four-e-and-a. That's the first thing that's happening and then you have that downbeat of one so it goes one-and, two-and, three-and, four-and, a-one. Okay? So, you have the one that's between and then the one that's together, okay? I'm really emphasizing those because by the time you speed it back up, it's just flying by. It's gonna--it's probably pretty hard to like, understand what's going on. So, you have a-one and then kind of the same thing in the opposite order happens with the upbeat, with the and-a. You have "and", the upbeat of one; one-and hitting at the same time and then the kick has the "a" of one while the high hat doesn't, okay? So, and-a, and-a, and-a. One-and-a. Two, three, four, one-and-a. Okay? So, put those together; one-and, two-and, three-and--okay? So, the kick, it's that--it's really compressed. There's a bunch of stuff going on in just that little space and time. Then you speed it all the way back up. Two, three. Okay? So, like I said, this is really going to work your doubles in the kick, all right? Keep watching. In the next clip, we'll talk about the rest of the beat."
