"JOEL SIEGEL: All right. So we're going to go ahead and do the hi-hat. I'm at 70 bpm. This is kind of that continual drive beat. You have all the upbeats and then the downbeat on one and the downbeat on three, okay? So here's what it looks and sounds like. All right, makes sense? It's basically, you're kind of--you're playing all those eighth notes in your right hand, like you're always doing, but you're kinda covering all the eighth notes between your snare and your kick drum, all right? Your snare is doing the two and four; and other than two and four, your kick drum is covering all that other slack with the one-&, &-three-&, &-one-&, all right? This is just kind of another way to think about it. So I want you to go ahead and play with me. I'll count us off. One, two, ready, play. All right? So there you go. You have all those upbeats and then the downbeat on one and a downbeat on three."
