"JOEL SIEGEL: All right. So we're going to keep building with our eighth notes in our kick drum. So far basically, the theme or the root of the ideas that we've been talking about is we're keeping that downbeat on one, all right? I'm just doing this to kind of keep everything rooted and kind of sounding fairly familiar to you. As we keep going, that will disappear and we'll move through some other patterns, okay? But for right now, we're just going to kind of increase the number of eighth notes that we're doing. We're going to fill out the bar a little bit. And this clip in particular, we're going to put some eighth notes. We're going to be playing the downbeat of one, the upbeat of one, the downbeat of three and the upbeat of four, okay? It sounds more complicated than it is, okay? Once we get into the semantics of explaining all this stuff, it gets pretty cryptic and you can kind of get bogged down in it, but just listen to it and you will hear it. This is what it sounds like without the hi-hat, the kick and the snare. All right? That's the basic idea. In the next clip, we'll throw in the hi-hat, see where everything lines up, and then play it together."
