How to Play The Side of a Snare Head

"JOEL SIEGEL: The next area of the drum that I want to discuss is just slightly out of center. This is basically going to be halfway between the rim and the center of the drum. As you can hear, the center is slightly--a slightly drier sound. And when you move out a little more towards the rim, you're going to get a lot more ring and you're going to get a lot more out of the--a lot more sound out of the actual drum. You're going to hear the drum a little more. So, this--this is used in classical music a lot, but you'll also find yourself using it in jazz, any kind of music that has kind of the more subtle aspects, a lot of dynamics and stuff like that. It'll sound like this. You can hear there's more of a tone and the sound doesn't just kinda drop out right after the attack as opposed to what happens in the center of the drum. Let me play for you briefly that same area of the drum out to the side a little bit with the snares on so you can hear it."
