"JOEL SIEGEL: So like I was saying a moment ago, that stroke where you dig into the head you're now lifting it up off the drum. That's going to be used a lot of times to develop accents and, yeah, accentuate different rhythms while you're stirring the soup. So I'll demonstrate. This is those--how those two different strokes are going to interplay, and most typically you'll find these together. One more aspect of using the brushes on the snare that I want to talk about is usually an application that you can use it for something like a bossa nova. You can use it for a lot of different styles, but this is the general concept. You're going to take that same idea of stirring the soup, that continual sound against--of the wires against the snare drum. But instead, you're going to chop it up just a little bit and give it more of a syncopated feel. This is what it's going to sound like--adding another stroke. So you can hear that there are some distinct notes rather than that long continuous note. This is one more way you can use the brushes."
