"JOEL SIEGEL: This stroke, the continuous stirring of the soup on the drum head, is quite a bit trickier than it looks. But the key, and you'll get it over time with practice, is to remain relax in both wrists. And the reason they call it stirring the soup is you're not pressing real hard into the head. The sound doesn't--you're actually going to get less sound if you do that. The amount of sound that you get doesn't have to do with the harder you push down. You just kinda let--you let it rest and you're letting it move around. With a lot of control, mind you. I recommend practicing brushes a lot. They're a unique skill. A lot of drummers don't develop their use of brushes, and this can make you stand out as a player."
