How to Play Drums with Brushes

JOEL SIEGEL: All right. So we're excited to add yet another tool in our bag of tricks. These are brushes. Mine are the shafted brushes--I can't remember what exactly what you call these--but they have this metal rod and the rubber casing which protects these wires when they're not in use. And you it open up--push that out and they fan out like that. And mine also have notches to where you can adjust the amount that it's going to fan out. You can see how it contracts and expands. You're going to end up using brushes. The main application is in jazz but you can also use them just to get a mellow tone, the same way that you use the rods in softer music, those quieter applications. Let's start out with the strokes just because we've covered some of those before. Strokes are going to be the same for your brushes. You're going to have the three grips, the French, German and American. And you're also going to have the different strokes, the upstroke, the down stroke and the full stroke, all right?
