How to Play a High Hat with a Side French Grip

"JOEL SIEGEL: As we went through all those grips, you might have noticed that I was hitting the top of the cymbal with the beat. This is one way to get a particular sound out of the hi-hat. It's kind of high pitched, it's a little pingy. It's very tight and dry. Another way to get a sound out of the hi-hat is by hitting the edge. This is a different sound. It's not as delicate, it's not as clean. You're going to use it more when you're kind of driving the band and louder parts, stuff like that. It also comes into play when the hi-hats are open. So, here's the French stroke, all three of those different strokes in French grip on the edge of the hi-hat."
