"JOEL SEIGEL: So, all your basic principles as far as grip and stroke apply for the rods. It's the same as the sticks. You are going to notice, of course, that they're going to be having different sounds because of the nature of the rods. One of the techniques that you'll use the most because of this kind of light sound that are inherent using the rods and therefore the context in which you're usually playing, you'll be using a lot of the French stroke. But don't let me tell you what to do. If you find yourself doing something else, that's fine. This is what I find myself doing. So, you got your French stroke up, down and full with the hot rod on the snare drum."
