"Hi! My name is John Armstrong with expertvillage.com. I am a professional guitar instructor and today we will be discussing slide guitar and slide guitar techniques. The next thing I would like to discuss is actually some finer points of slide guitar playing. As I stated earlier, you will not press down onto the string, you will very likely drag the slides across the strings, applying no downward pressure into the strings or at least very little downward pressure. Another thing that you want to do is to drag, let’s say for example that you are using your third finger like I am, you would want to leave the first and second fingers dragging ever so lightly behind the slides on the strings… without it. Now I will try doing a slide into that note without dragging my first and second fingers and you will notice a lot of unwanted noise, lot of background noise, lot of unwanted vibrations and noises from other strings that which was muted out by dragging the first and second fingers, you know a much cleaner tone, which usually you want not always sometimes you might want that real nasty dirty sound with a lot of overtones and things like that in which case I remove the first and second fingers and get those nasty tones.
