Hi! My name is John Armstrong. I am a professional guitar instructor and today we will be discussing slide guitar and slide guitar techniques. Okay the next thing I would like to discuss is choosing the proper finger on the left hand in which to play slide with. Typically speaking, majority of the slide players or people who play using a slide will tend to use the third finger or the ring finger on the left hand. It is just a good finger to use, it allows you to still be able to play power chords using your first and fourth fingers and still be able to some scale stuff using your first, second and fourth fingers when fretting individual notes. The third finger also allows you to keep the slide up and out of the way. Other people will use the fourth finger or the pinkie finger, which still allows them to use the first and third fingers for using and playing the power chords, you still have the first finger, using your first and third fingers for fretting individual notes and then you play the slide using the pinkie. Sometimes you will see the middle finger being used once again for the same reasons, you have the ability to use your first, third and fourth fingers, or first and third or first and fourth fingers and you have the middle fingers serving as your slide fingers. The idea being, there is going to be either your second, third or fourth fingers. You still need to have the first finger to drag behind the slide, that is why you could really use the first finger. I will discuss dragging the finger behind the slide later.
