JOEL SIEGEL: All right. One more secret weapon you have up your sleeve with the brushes is when you get a roll at the cymbal. But a lot of times if you're trying to roll like this, you'll end up getting--you'll end up dampening the cymbal with the brush because of the way that the brushes are interacting and the cymbal is moving at the same time. It's not always predictable the way that the cymbal moves because of the way it's angled and the way it's weighted. So what you can do instead is split the difference. Bring your brush in like that and just split the brush with the cymbal, just pretty much right in the middle, then you can use either your fingers or wrists to just kinda twitch and get a nice little roll sound. Here's what it sounds like. So you can see that I can use either my fingers or my wrists. Here's using my fingers. Here's using my wrist. Which one to use will depend on the position of the cymbal, your chops and whichever is more comfortable for you.
